In Großbritannien hat der Mobilfunkanbieter o2 aufgrund der steigenden Nutzung von Smartphones wie dem Apple iPhone eine Netzüberlastung verzeichnet.  Nach Konzernangaben gegenüber der Financial Times seien die Probleme aber mittlerweile behoben worden. Der Hauptgrund für die Netzüberlastung sei das Apple iPhone 3GS welches o2 bis November 2009 in Großbritannien exklusiv zum Verkauf angeboten hatte. Laut o2 England-Chef Ronald Dunne würde die Nachfrage bei Datendiensten explodieren.

Das Datenvolumen ist um das 18-fache gestiegen und daher wurden mittlerweile umgerechnet rund 34 Millionen Euro in den Netzausbau investiert. Im Rahmen der Investition wurden 200 weitere Basisstationen in der britischen Hauptstadt London aufgebaut. Die Lage im o2 Mobilfunknetz konnte durch den Netzausbau entspannt werden. Gegenüber den Kunden hatte sich Ronald Dunne bereits entschuldigt. Die mobilen Datendienste wie Video on Demand, MP3-Downloads oder Routenplaner werden immer beliebter. Der Mobilfunkanbieter o2 gehört zum spanischen Telekommunikationskonzern Telefonica und zählt rund 30.000 Mitarbeiter. Das Produktangebot umfasst Mobilfunk, DSL und Festnetz.

Das beliebte Touchscreenhandy Apple iPhone 3GS ist wieder bei O₂ Germany verfügbar und kann dort ohne Abschluss eines Mobilfunkvertrags als 16 GB-Version für 779 Euro erworben werden. Das Unternehmen hat die Verfügbarkeit des Smartphones mittlerweile bestätigt. Jedoch kann das Handy nur von ausgewählten Kunden gekauft werden, wie Pressesprecher Harald Maass gegenüber dem Onlinemagazin Teltarif berichtete. Wer das Apple iPhone 3GS unbedingt haben möchte aber nicht zum ausgewählten Kundenkreis gehört, der sollte unbedingt die Hotline von O₂ anrufen und hat eventuell die Chance mit Hartnäckigkeit eines zu bekommen. Das Angebot richtet sich vorwiegend nur an Bestandskunden.

Die Nachfrage war bereits im November vergangenen Jahres sehr hoch und daher hat O₂ nun eine ausreichende Menge eingekauft. Das Apple iPhone 3GS verfügt über einen Touchscreen und konnte seit seiner Markteinführung weltweit bereits millionenfach verkauft werden. Wenn man Bestandskunde bei O₂ ist sollte die Möglichkeit genutzt werden sich das Handy zu kaufen, denn es hat keinen SIM-Lock und funktioniert daher mit jeder SIM-Karte. Das Telefonieren beherrscht das Smartphone ebenso wie den SMS/MMS-Versand, es können Videos und Musik abgespielt werden. Im Apple iTunes Store und App Store können Songs, Filme, Hörbücher, Spiele und Programme heruntergeladen werden.

I read with sadness that Tarma have decided to discontinue development of their QuickInstall and ExpertInstall applications. These are really excellent alternatives to heavyweights like InstallShield, which can cost thousands of dollars, and do pretty much everything you’d want out of a normal installer for your application. You can run custom actions at any point during the install, add drivers and other stuff you want to tag along your app, and more. Good luck guys, and thanks for all the fish!

The Register reports that BitTorrent has come to deals with three consumer electronics manufacturers in order to develop devices with an embedded BitTorrent client, thus bypassing the PC and freeing it to do other tasks. This would be specially useful to laptop users, who don’t want their mobile computer immobilized by a large download.

Yesterday I read some news about Chumby, a new WiFi device being released soon, costing $150, and which looks like an alarm clock on steroids. It features a color screen, the ability to run widgets, hackable hardware, and a squishterface (just made that up, to try to describe the squeeze sensor that the soft case uses to provide user input).

The company behind the Chumby actively promotes hacking the product in any way you want, so this could become another Roomba, albeit cooler (yes, I know, the Roomba moves, so what!). I have signed up to try and get an early sample, let’s see if they consider my arguments.

A few words of constructive criticism – when creating an account, the country drop-down list is not in alphabetical order, so you spend quite a bit of time trying to find yours (US users will have it easy, as it is the default). Additionally, once the steps are completed, you are asked to enter the device ID and give it a name, after which you end up staring at a white page with the big black words: “Application error (Rails”. Whatever that means.
